Living in Cosmo City
Living in Cosmo City Cosmo City is one of Johannesburg’s most interesting and least talked-about suburbs. Built on the northwestern edge of the city in the mid-2000s as a deliberately mixed-income, multiracial development, it has grown into a genuine community of over 100,000 residents — and it is still growing.
Whether you are moving to Cosmo City, considering it as a property investment, or simply want to understand what life here is really like, this is the guide written by people who actually live here.
Where Is Cosmo City?
Cosmo City sits in Region C of the City of Johannesburg, bounded by Malibongwe Drive (R512) to the north and east, South Africa Drive as the main internal spine, and open land to the west where the Gautrain expansion routes are now planned.
It is approximately:
- 25km from the Johannesburg CBD (40–55 minutes by road in traffic)
- 20km from Sandton (35–50 minutes)
- 12km from Lanseria Airport (15–20 minutes)
- 8km from Northgate Shopping Centre
- 5km from Cresta Shopping Centre
Major road access is via Malibongwe Drive (connecting to the N14 and N1) and South Africa Drive (the main internal arterial route).
The Extensions — Understanding Cosmo City’s Layout
Cosmo City is divided into numbered extensions (Ext 1 through Ext 11 and beyond), each with slightly different housing stock and character:
- Extensions 1–4 (eastern side) — the original development. Mix of fully subsidised (RDP) homes and bonded properties. Dense, well-established, close to South Africa Drive.
- Extensions 5–8 (central) — largely bonded properties. More spacious stands, more cars in driveways, slightly quieter residential feel.
- Extensions 9–11 (western) — newer development. Closer to open land where the Gautrain’s Cradle Station is planned. Slightly more affordable for renters.
